ABOUT THE ARTIST...

‘All art is at once surface and symbol. Those who go beneath the surface do so at their peril. Those who read the symbol do so at their peril. It is the spectator, and not life, that art really mirrors.’- OSCAR WILDE

Amelia Jae is a storyteller based near South Australia’s Fleurieu Peninsula (Kaurna land).

While her “Clark Kent” identity involves a career in Communications and Marketing, in her spare time, she uses art as a medium to explore the human psyche, culture, and perception.

Fascinated by human emotion and how we perceive one another, Amelia creates vibrant portraits of racially ambiguous subjects. By using subtle, near-blank expressions, she shifts the role of “artist” to the viewer – inviting them to project their own experiences, biases, and emotions onto the canvas.

Her work is shaped by influences like Maria Lassnig, Claire Tabouret, Inès Longevial, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Pablo Picasso, and Andy Dixon, yet she remains most inspired by any storyteller who embraces the unrefined messiness of the human experience.
